The Sandcrawler #42: BB-8 Belly Rubs

Dan and Mac are back after Christmas and they have the toys to prove it!  Santa was very good to your hosts and it was pretty good year in general for Star Wars action figure collectors.

As 2017 draws to a close we’re looking back at some of our favourite Star Wars collectibles that were released in the past year.

We have both seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi multiple times now and we’ve got some more geeking out to do! Fair warning though, we liked The Last Jedi—a lot.  No room here for haters!

We’ve seen a lot of new merchandise from The Last Jedi but can we expect more in 2018? We talk about who and what we’d like to see in plastic form from The Last Jedi.

We announced two winners of the Box Lunch exclusive Funko Pop BB-9E and there’s one more chance for you to win in our Christmas Giveaway as we announce our final giveaway.  Make sure to listen for all the details!

We would like to thank everyone who has gotten onboard the Sandcrawler express over the past year. We have had a blast bringing the show to you and wish you all a very Happy New Year and may the force be with you in 2018!

Not much else to say, it’s in the title! Dan and Mac saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi on opening night, drove home and hit the mics to bring you their initial thoughts.

What did you think of The Last Jedi? Let us know!

Stay tuned towards the end of the show where we announce the winner of the Fenn Rau action figure.  The Christmas giveaways continue too! Listen and email us this week’s “Wizard Word” for a chance to win one of two Funko POP BB-9E figures!

This is our last show until after Christmas Day so be sure to share with us what Santa brought you by reaching out on social media!  We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas from your pals on The Sandcrawler!

The Sandcrawler #40:  Porg on Board

Join Dan and Mac as they begin their second Christmas season together!  And it isn’t Christmas without some action figure talk! Has Hasbro released too many Black Series version of The Last Jedi Rey figures?  The Bistan/Shore Trooper VS pack is pretty great, but not perfect.  Hasbro has done a pretty good job with the VS Packs starting with The Force Awakens. We break them down from The Force Awakens, through to Rogue One and into The Last Jedi. Mac is celebrating his 50th birthday and he’s doing it with a piece of Star Wars history while Dan is in full porg-mode as he discovers what may be the coolest piece of Star Wars merchandise from 2017.  This week we kick off our Christmas gift contest. Each show between now and Christmas we are giving away one Star Wars figure. Listen for details on how you can win.  It’s just a little way for us to say Merry Christmas and thank you for listening to The Sandcrawler, your home for Action Figure Therapy!

What does the recent announcement from Lucasfilm mean for collectors? Is the latest 3-pack of Star Wars figures worth buying? You have questions. We have answers!

Happy Wookiee Life Day weekend from Dan and Mike! Dan met a childhood hero at Rhode Island Comic Con and maybe, just maybe cracked the case of, "Does Chewbacca eat Porg?" Watch Dan's conspiracy theory video, disguised as a look at all the Funko POP! porgs and decide for yourself!

Friend of the show, Chris Hamilton sent us a clip from the old Ewoks cartoon that begs the question, "is 'Dengar' a curse word?"

Funko recently had a grand opening of their new headquarters and we're adding it to our bucket list of the ultimate west coast road trip.  But hey, we're a toy collecting show so let's talk some toys!  We still don't know what to expect from Disney Parks' plans for a "sandcrawler playset" as announced at Star Wars Celebration Orlando so we talk about a recent rumor that has us excited.

Dan reviews the Amazon exclusive Black Series First Order Stormtrooper With Gear and Mike reviews the Star Wars Universe Three Pack that is exclusive to Target and Canadian Tire. We also talk about the new Disney Store exclusive, Toy Box figures based on the Disney Infinity game figurines.  Where do they fit in the grand scheme of Star Wars collecting?

Welcome foolish mortals, to the second annual Sandcrawler Halloween special! It’s one of our favourite holidays and this week’s show is choc full of Star Wars Halloween fun!  We reveal the next winner of the Target Share the Force Red Stormtrooper Funko Pop and then dive right into Halloween hijinks.  Have a vintage or recent photo of yourself in a Star Wars costume?  Did you wear a Ben Cooper Star Wars mask as a kid? Tag us on Twitter (@Sandcrawlercast) with the photo for a chance to win a prize from Dan!

It wouldn’t be Halloween without some treats and we cover that with I Wanted Everything, where we share our most recent finds including Dan’s Funko Pop plans for Rhode Island Comic Con and Mac picks up some loose figures for a future project or two.

Thanks to everyone who reached out with their favourite scary Star Wars figures, we’ve done this for two years now and the list continues to grow!

Also we’d like to give a huge shoutout and thank you to Funko for giving The Sandcrawler a shout out on their podcast!!

Season 4 of Star Wars Rebels began this week and we decided to get out another show so we could geek out a little about it.  We saw the first episode at Star Wars Celebration back in April but it took the last half of the story to really kick the season into high gear!  Forget your fancy themes of the Hero’s Journey and the Force, we can sum the whole premiere up with one word: JETPACKS!

But never fear, as your home for action figure therapy we of course have tons of Star Wars toy talk as we dive into some new buys that Mac swore he wouldn’t get and Dan shares his expert tips on keeping up with all things from Funko POP The Last Jedi.  And keeping with our pre-Halloween theme Dan talks about a recent spooky-themed TV show and some cool figures he picked up.  Ok, not Star Wars figures, but still cool. Trust us.

Halloween is just around the corner and like we did last year, we are celebrating by revealing some of the scariest Star Wars figures ever released.  Not Rancor scary, but “POTF2 Leia scary.” We’re looking for figures that were released that make you shake your head and say, “Why…..???” Send us your favorites and we’ll read them on our October 28th show!

Here’s the figures we covered last year. All below information courtesy Jedi Business.com:

New York Comic Con and the trailer for The Last Jedi?  Now THAT’S an awesome week!!

Dan gives his report on New York Comic Con 2017 and all of the awesome Star Wars merchandise that was announced.  He also had a great time hanging out with the fine folks at Funko where he helped them officially unbox his dream come true: The Dengar Funko POP!

We review the trailer for The Last Jedi and like all of you we’re stoked to see what’s in store for the new heroes of Star Wars. And as long as Kylo Ren doesn’t kill his mom, we can’t wait to see it in December!

In I Wanted Everything Mac has a big ol box of figures given to him and a great customer service story involving Disney Parks.

We revealed the winner of our Target “Share The Force” Funko POP exclusive last week but never received word from the winner so we’ve offered it up again.  Listen to see if you’ve won!

We would like to give a giant, Sandcrawler-sized THANKYOU to our buddy, Chris Hamilton for his awesome anniversary present!

Halloween is just around the corner and like we did last year, we are celebrating by revealing some of the scariest Star Wars figures ever released.  Not Rancor scary, but “POTF2 Leia scary.”  We’re looking for figures that were released that make you shake your head and say, “Why…..???”   Send us your favourites and we’ll read them on our October 28th show!   Here’s the figures we covered last year:

We are celebrating one year of The Sandcrawler podcast and are doing it with what we do best: Talking about Star Wars action figures and bringing our listeners a big dose of Action Figure Therapy!

Make sure you stay tuned to the end of this week's show to hear the name of the winner of our Target Exclusive Classic Red Stormtrooper Funko POP figure.  Thanks to everyone that submitted photos of their Funko POP collections! We've thrown all names in a hat and have picked the winner (you'll have to listen to find out who)!

We asked our listeners how their collecting habits may have changed in the past year and you responded with some great ideas behind Star Wars collecting.  We talk about where our collecting stories have taken us since we started recording together.  We've influenced each other to be sure!

We have some Force Friday followup (check out TheSandcrawler.net for additional photos) Dan's thoughts on attending the first ever HasCON, and Mark Hamill and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ron Howard gets spicy. Have you tried out the Force Link feature on The Last Jedi action figures? It's pretty darn cool if you're like Dan's son!  Check out friend of the show, Chris Salton, who has a great video scrapbook from Hascon!

Help us out by leaving your 4-star review so more people can discover the wonderment that is The Sandcrawler!  Give us an iTunes review, tag us on Twitter or send us an email and we'll feature it on an upcoming episode!

How was our Force Friday II?  How about it felt awfully familiar and not just because of the toys.  Also, it was twice as awesome!

Just like Rogue Friday last year, Dan sat outside his local ToysrUs waiting for the midnight start to Force Friday II.  The goal this time around was The Last Jedi action figures and just like last year, he and the small group of Star Wars fans were treated to pizza from the voice of Tarkin in Star Wars Rebels and of course, Admiral Raddus from Rogue One:  Stephen Stanton! And just like last year, Mike....was at work.  The Sandcrawler would like to thank Stephen for his kindness and for being such an awesome Star Wars ambassador!

On Force Friday II morning, Mike hit his local ToysrUs and then crossed the border over to Michigan.  It looks like it was hit or miss for alot of people who were out on Force Friday.  Mike's stores were pretty successful.  It took a few stops at different stores but the guys were able to find what they were looking for.

If that isn't enough, The Sandcrawler is celebrating it's first year anniversary at the end of September!!  We want to hear from our listeners by answering this question:  Has your collecting habits changed since last year? If so, how? If not, why not?   We want to hear from you so send us your thoughts via email, mp3 or private message on Twitter or Facebook. We'll read them on our Anniversary Episode!  And hey, thanks so much for tuning in to our little show, we can't believe how much fun it's been bringing it to you and look forward to doing it for a long, long time!

Our "I Wanted Everything" segment is kind of all over this episode, here's some of the highlights of our recent finds including the awesome Black Series Imperial Stormtrooper helmet.

We have something special to go along with this week's edition of The Sandcrawler: a video review of the 2001 Hasbro's Power of the Jedi B-wing Fighter!

On this week's show, Dan and Mike talk about how they are changing as collectors.  Mike points to a recent find of his, the B-wing fighter released in 2001 as part of Hasbro's Power of the Jedi line.  It's a great looking vehicle and Mike has a review! See for yourself and decide if you should add this beauty to your Star Wars room!

You are listening to The Sandcrawler Podcast Recorded Tuesday Aug 15, 2017

Yep, you aren’t dreaming! Back to back shows! We had a lot more to talk about after our last show and we’re chomping at the bit to get to it so we’ve taken advantage of our schedules to bring you a really, REALLY good episode this week.

We have changed as collectors since we started this podcast almost a year ago and we felt that enough has happened recently as far as our collecting habits that it was time to actually put into words what we want to do going forward.  Don’t worry, we’re still going to buy Star Wars action figures but maybe, just maybe, a little differently than before.  It’s a discussion we hope will give you some ideas for maybe giving your collecting habits a second look.

Force Friday is only a couple weeks way and we’re geared up for it!  Well, mostly Dan is, but he has a plan to make it another good one! Mike’s excited too but after receiving an enormous gift of the action figure variety, you’ll have to forgive him for being a little less excited than Dan.

After a couple of Collector Spotlight shows, Dan and Mike are back with what they're excited about post-San Diego Comic Con.  They also take a look at leaked The Last Jedi figures and make a pitch to have Joe Pesci provide voice over in The Last Jedi.

Hasbro's reveals at San Diego Comic Con look to bring alot of cool toys this Christmas and beyond.  Dan and Mike break down what has excited them the most.  From a kid-sized Landspeeder to Luke and Rey from The Last Jedi to Rogue One Vintage Collection cards, the guys are psyched for what's coming down the pike. Check our Ryan Beise's interview  with Hasbro.

Dan has a Twitter conversation with The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson and the guys decide that this little guy MUST be voiced by Joe Pesci!  Forget about porgs, THIS GUY is gonna be a star!

Photo leaks from Panama reveal the new look of Star Wars figures for The Last Jedi.  It's something old, something new and the guys agree, they look pretty great!  Except for that STUPID pack-in weapon with Rey.  SERIOUSLY!!!

Also, Captain Rex is Moana's dad.

The Sandcrawler #31-Brian Stillman of Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys

We continue our celebrity Star Wars collector shows this week with Brian Stillman,  the writer and director of Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys!

Brian joins us to discuss the motivation behind his 2014 documentary on the history of the Kenner Star Wars action figure line.  It's an amazing film and has been a big influence on Dan and Mike and their fairly recent focus on vintage Star Wars toys.

We discuss what went into Kenner deciding what the original twelve Star Wars figures should be and take a look at a wish list of characters that may have been considered.  What was the reason that the main villain of Star Wars, Grand Moff Tarkin wasn’t made into a figure? Listen and find out!

Brian shares some great tips on being a focused collector and the importance of collecting something that excites you.

Check out the Plastic Galaxy website and be sure to order a copy of this in-depth look at the toy line that started it all:  Kenner Star Wars figures.

Thanks Brian!

We are very happy to bring you a special Sandcrawler this week as we talk to award winning musician and engineer, Cory Churko!  Amongst his many accomplishments as a musician Cory has toured with Kelly Clarkson and Shania Twain and it was during a Shania Twain concert in 2015 that Mike spotted Cory on stage, wearing a Rebel Alliance patch on his sleeve.  After discovering that he was indeed a huge Star Wars fan we had to have him on the show to find out about his fandom and of course, what kind of collector he is.

Cory shares what it was like growing up with Star Wars as a kid in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in the 70’s and 80’s.  He talks about what it takes to see a new Star Wars movie while on tour and also some of the very unique collectibles that he’s received while touring.  There aren’t too many people that can claim that superstar Kelly Clarkson has added to their Star Wars collection!

Be sure to check out Cory’s band, Toque, which is a Canadian band covering classic Canadian rock.  We at the Sandcrawler especially like the band’s logo.  With all that the fame that has come to Cory as a musician and engineer it was awesome to find out that he’s just like us:  a huge fan of Star Wars and Star Wars collectibles.

Join us as we wrap up our respective July long weekend holidays. Lots of bbq and fireworks and of course, lots of Star Wars!

The guys get together over the shared Canada Day/Independence Day long weekend to discuss social media overdoing it again with the news from the Han Solo movie and the very fun Forces of Destiny animated series.

The toys for the new show look very unique and the guys may just pick up one or two for their collections.  Dan shows his fellow fire fighters Rogue One and the guys discuss some people's reactions when they find out grown men collect toys.  Dan helps Mike solve a very serious issue with his Rogue One figures (not really) and they share their most recent finds in I Wanted Everything.

Mike is featured on From4LOMtoZuckuss.com where he has a pretty cool photo essay involving a couple of Canadian rebels.

We've gotten tons of photos from fellow collectors and we'll be posting them soon!

We barely made it through the week to bring you this new episode! Blue Shadow Virus had us both against the ropes (can you catch a cold via Skype?) but we are back with some Action Figure Therapy!

Maybe it’s the antibiotics in our systems but we’re talking about Tusken Raiders in Batman and an idea for a new Star Wars movie featuring two brothers.

We discuss the awful news of a major theft from Rancho Obi-Wan and discuss Jedi Temple Archive’s recent poll about what repack Vintage Collection figures would collectors want in the spring.

How do you pronounce Tantive IV?

Stick around until the end of the episode as we make a big, BIG announcement as The Sandcrawler takes another step into a larger world!

We celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars this week!  Can you believe Star Wars hit the big four-oh on May 25?  Neither can we but we do our best to digest it and we've brought along the "OT Curmudgeon" himself, Tom Berges from I Grew Up Star Wars to help us out!

Thanks to "Chris Fitzpatrick 87" for your humbling iTunes review of our show. We are so flattered by your kind words!  Thanks also to Bryan Dyck for making us, well, collectibles!  Also check out Bryan's goofy stop motion video that we talked about this week.  Never too old to play with toys!

If you didn't attend Star Wars Celebration in Orlando this past April then you are eligible for a great contest over at Rebelscum.com where you have a chance to win a TON of swag, including something from The Sandcrawler!

Vanity Fair chose Star Wars' anniversary to preview their The Last Jedi cover feature.  As always the covers look amazing but even more amazing is the poster that new subscribers can get.  By the way, who the heck is this little guy?

This week in I Wanted Everything Mike picks up a couple more vintage Marvel comics and Dan loves the new Funko POP Luke in landspeeder.  He's also picked up some Topps 40th Anniversary trading cards which are just full of nostalgia and are pretty darn cool too.  The piece de resistance for Dan though is a very special gift from a fellow collector.

Tom Berges, owner of I Grew Up Star Wars.com website and Facebook group talks with us and we catch up on our first meeting at Celebration.  Then Dan, the young punk of the show, poses twenty-one questions to the two old guys, Mike and Tom, and it's a ridiculously fun time.  We're pretty sure no other Star Wars 40th Anniversary podcast includes references to lederhosen.

The Sandcrawler #25-Getting “Igre-ed”

Happy belated May the Fourth!  This week on your home for Action Figure Therapy, Dan and Mike are trying to sort out what comes next in their Star Wars rooms.  After Star Wars Celebration they have come back as slightly different collectors.  What have they learned about collecting and about themselves? You’ll want to listen and find out!

May the Fourth has come and gone but not without a few cool nods from...the Canadian government?

In a meandering editon of I Wanted Everything the hosts share a mix of Celebration buys and more recent ones and Dan has an offer for Mike that he must promise to accept Dan’s terms before the offer can happen. This isn’t going to be a Lando/Vader thing is it?

New projects are afloat for both collectors including a pretty huge one for Dan as he begins his journey to build a full-scale Han in Carbonite prop.  Check out prop building websites, RPF.COM and THE DENTED HELMET.

Thanks so much to Bearhug71 and Tyler Thompson for your glowing iTunes reviews! As always we’re humbled and appreciate it very much!

What’s the deal with 4-LOM’s cloak and what does “Getting Igre-ed” mean?  We explain it all on this week’s Sandcrawler!

Apr 30, 2017

Dan and Mike are back with a second look at their Star Wars Celebration Orlando experience and this time we’ve brought along our good friend, Chris Salton of The Collector’s Hutt and Brews and Blasters to help them sort it all out.

This week we try to sort out exactly why the lines at Celebration were seemingly endless.  Chris shares some of his favourite finds in Orlando and he and Dan recollect a chance encounter with Dave Filoni!  You have to hear it to believe it!

Dan makes his pitch to appear in the Han Solo movie (see show title) and Mike’s impromptu Star Wars character impressions spark an idea to get him on Star Wars Rebels. There’s discussion about Hasbro’s recent Vintage Collection announcement, the Rebels Season 4 panel and what Star Wars podcast would be complete without some talk about The Last Jedi trailer?  With a little bit of Disney Parks merchandise and Funko POP thrown in, this is a show you don't want to miss!

The Sandcrawler #23- Middle-Aged Men Hugging

It finally happened!  The long awaited FIRST face-to-face meeting of your hosts! Dan and Mike meet up for Star Wars Celebration Orlando and well, there was hugging. It was magical!

Your hosts hit the ground running in Florida last Wednesday and are here with the first part of their adventures.  There were celebrity meet and greets, ridiculously long lines and oh so many Star Wars toys!  What were some of our favourite finds? We had a blast and can’t wait for you to hear about it!

Did Dan get his Luke Skywalker jacket in time to meet Mark Hamill?    What were the prices like at the vendor booths and how did the Star Wars Celebration community like our Jawa socks?

Mike visited Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Galactic Nights and also sat in on a panel of X-wing pilots.  What do heroes of the Rebel Alliance think about their action figure selves? Mike asked and has the audio for their answers!

We’re tired! We’re broke! But man are we glad to be part of the Star Wars community!  Thanks to everyone that reached out on social media with their favourite Star Wars Celebration finds, it was fun to share them on this week’s show!  Check our show notes at Retrozap.com for links to everyone's responses from Twitter.

Welcome to a special ROAD TRIP EDITION of The Sandcrawler!  So you’re probably thinking, “geez you guys, you just put out a show on Sunday, what the heck?” Well, we thought we would put together something special for all of you that are on your way to Orlando for Star Wars Celebration.   Over the past number of episodes we’ve had some expert, veteran Star Wars Celebration podcasters on the show to share some of their knowledge with us since we’ve never been to a Celebration.

We thought that we would gather up all of these segments into one last show before the fun starts at Celebration. If you’re a regular listener then this show can be used as a reminder of what to expect in Orlando this week.

If you’re new to The Sandcrawler, then hey, welcome! Thanks for joining us!  We hope you like what you hear!

So join Dan and Mike as we pick the brains of Dan Zehr, Chris Salton, Michael Nipp and Jake Stephens and we’ll see you on the show floor!

The Sandcrawler #21 - Jawa Pants

It is Celebration Week! Dan and Mike are finalizing plans for their first face to face meeting down in Orlando for Star Wars Celebration!

Meet the hosts of The Sandcrawler and the team from Retrozap.com on Thursday April 6 at David's Bar and Grill at the Hilton Orlando.  We'll be handing out our special Star Wars Celebration swag at the event and would love to say hi!  Find out who we have decided to have a photo with together.

Here's a hint, he's in Star Wars.  And was trained by Yoda.  Will Dan get a suitable piece of memorabilia in time for Celebration? Will Mike figure out what Rebel pilots he wants to meet?  You'll find out all the answers on our last show before Star Wars Celebration!

That's all for now, we gotta catch a transport to Orlando!

Give us an iTunes review, tag us on Twitter or send us an email and we'll feature it on an upcoming episode!

It's a jammed packed mega-show this week as Dan and Mike reveal their Star Wars Celebration Panel choices and discuss the end of Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels.

A chance Twitter conversation with a Rogue One X-Wing pilot, and our thoughts on the ending of Season 3 Star Wars Rebels are just part of this colossal episode. We discuss what collecting panels we hope to see at Star Wars Celebration Orlando and hint at some cool swag we'll be handing out.

Jake Stevens from Toy Run and From4LomToZuckuss.com returns to offer his expert advice on navigating the dealer floor . We also put out the call that the best way to enjoy being a Star Wars collector is to reach out on social media like we have!

In I Wanted Everything Mike gets an awesome gift from a friend and the Jedha Revolt 4-Pack from his wife.  Dan finds a sweet deal on a Kenner mail-in Emperor Palpatine figure and picks up a couple posters to bring to Celebration.

We review the season ending episodes of Star Wars Rebels and....is that Haunted Mansion music in our...ahem, recreation of a Palpatine/Thrawn conversation?  You'll just have to listen and find out!

Your home for Action Figure Therapy returns for nearly two hours of Star Wars fun!

Help us out by leaving your 4-star review so more people can discover the wonderment that is The Sandcrawler!  Give us an iTunes review, tag us on Twitter or send us an email and we'll feature it on an upcoming episode!
